# Answering the people who report things

The feedback form always promised a follow-up. Nothing in the product could keep that promise. Now it can.

![A question from Priya Shah about checklist reports, open in the feedback queue, with a follow-up typed into Reply by email above the first reply already sent, and a note that the reply goes to her address and her answer comes back.](https://handbook.company/marketing/updates/answering-reports.webp)

## We found this ourselves

Working through a round of feedback, we noticed that three of its four reports were questions, and the fourth was the same question asked again eight days later, because nothing had answered the first one.

The form has always had "You can follow up with me about this report" ticked by default. There was no way to keep that promise. People who report things cannot read their own report back, no status change tells them anything, and there was nowhere to write an answer. A question got answered only if somebody noticed it and wrote an email by hand.

## What changed

- We can reply from the report itself, and the reply comes from a person rather than a no-reply address, so answering back works.
- Past replies sit under the box, so a report that was answered can be told apart from one that was ignored.
- "Ask a question" is now its own report type. It used to become a bug report, which made our bug queue look worse than it was and buried the questions inside it.

## If you declined follow-up

Then we will not email you, and the report says so rather than failing when somebody presses send. Reports filed before the form offered that choice are treated as answerable, because reading a missing answer as a no would make every older report unanswerable.
