# A waste log built for the person at the bin

Shipped · August 19, 2026 · Sustainability

Record what actually gets thrown away, in weight, volume or count, with tare containers and conversions that only run when they are honest.

![The Waste Log's three buttons, Log food, Log packaging and Log plate waste, above today's entries in pounds, gallons, cartons and each, with a weight beside those whose item has one, like 6 Croissants at 420 g.](https://handbook.company/marketing/updates/waste-log.webp)

## Projected waste is not measured waste

Sustainability could estimate waste from what you bought. Nothing recorded what was actually thrown out, which is the number a waste programme, a cost figure or a city report needs. The standard answer to this is a printed logbook and a spreadsheet.

## Three buttons at the bin

Food, packaging, plate waste. Pick what it was and why, where it went, and how much, as a weight, a volume or a count. Anyone on the team can log one. Your own entry stays editable for a day, and admins can fix anything.

- Weigh in a saved container and its tare weight comes off automatically.
- Pounds and kilograms always total. Volumes and counts convert only when the entry is linked to an item whose units are set up, and anything that cannot be converted honestly is counted separately rather than guessed into the total.
- Collectors record who hauls what away, so the log reconciles against what actually left the building.
