Add a supplier before you know its price

Add supplier on an item no longer waits for a price. Leave the price empty if you do not know it yet, and add it when you do.

October 17, 2026 · 1.65.2

Add supplier for Matcha Powder on a phone, with Hill Street Market as where you buy it and the Price field empty. Under the fields the sheet says to leave the price empty if you do not know it yet and add it later with Update price on the supplier's row. The Add supplier button at the bottom is ready to press.

What was wrong

Adding a supplier to an item asked for where you buy it, the price and the unit the price is for. The button stayed greyed out with Enter the price under it until a price was typed, so the only way past it was to make one up.

Plenty of the time you know where you buy something before you know what it costs. The invoice has not come in yet, or the price changes every week and you would rather wait for the next receipt.

How adding a supplier works now

Choose the supplier and press Add supplier. With the price field empty, the supplier is added to the item with no price, the message says so, and its row reads No price yet. When you know the price, Update price on that row takes it.

A price you have started to type still has to be finished, with the unit it is for, so a half-typed number is never saved as the real one. Prices that come in on an invoice or from a supplier's catalog are added the way they always were.

Recipe costs while a price is missing

Recipes cost an item from its usual supplier's price. If the first supplier you add has no price yet, it still becomes the usual one, and recipes pick up its price as soon as you add it. If the item already has a priced usual supplier and you make the new, unpriced one usual instead, the sheet warns that recipes would have no price for the item until you add one.
