Sell what you buy, like bagels

Bagels, pastries and bottled drinks go on the menu as the items you buy, costed from what you pay for them, with several kinds of one item at their average.

October 5, 2026 · 1.43.0

A menu item called Bagels at $4.00, sold as one of four kinds: plain, everything and cinnamon raisin bagels at $1.25 each and a pretzel bagel at $1.60. It usually costs $1.34, keeps $2.66, and costs up to $1.60 with the dearest kind.

What was missing

A menu item could be costed from a recipe, which suits what is made in house. Plenty of what a cafe sells is bought and sold as it is: bagels, danishes, muffins, bottled drinks. The only way to cost those was a line per size, and lines add up, so there was no way to say that one sale of Bagels is one of four bagels rather than all four.

How kinds are costed

An item on the menu is now made from a recipe or sold as items you buy. Items you buy names the inventory item one sale is, or several kinds of it. Several kinds cost their average, in equal shares unless you set how sales split, and the item view shows each kind's cost beside the usual cost and the most it can cost with the dearest kind.

A kind is costed one at a time, so an item you count by the bag, box or case needs to know how many come in one. The editor asks, once per item, and a missing price makes the cost read as the least it is until the price is added, as it does everywhere else.

Add items you buy

Add to the menu has Add items you buy, which works from the items already in your inventory. Items named like Bagel - plain and Bagel - everything are offered together as kinds of one item, with one name and one price, so a whole bakery case goes on in a single pass. A name with no dash whose first or last word matches, like Pretzel Bagel, is offered unticked for you to decide.

If the menu already has the item with nothing to cost it from, such as Bagels brought in from a printed menu, the kinds go on that item rather than a second one. An item with several sizes is left to its own editor, since a dozen is not one bagel. The kinds of one item counted the same way are asked once: how many muffins come in a box, saved for every muffin you ticked.

What staff see

Staff see which items a size can be, like one of plain, everything or pretzel, and never what each costs or how often it is chosen. Setting items up as kinds is for owners and admins.
